Year 2 News

What’s been happening in Grade 2 recently?

As inquirers and learners, we have been exploring the idea of a growth mindset. We have been learning about the difference between a “brick brain” and a “bubblegum brain.” A brick brain gives up easily, avoids challenges, and says things like “I can’t do this.” A bubblegum brain stretches, grows, and keeps trying, even when learning feels tricky. Through class discussions, we have been practising using positive self-talk and turning “I can’t” into “I can’t yet.” We have been encouraging one another to make mistakes, learn from them, and show perseverance when faced with challenges.

As faith-filled people, we have been learning about the story of Zacchaeus the Tax Collector and exploring the message of forgiveness. Through this story, students have been discussing how we can show kindness, take responsibility for our actions, and make positive choices when we make mistakes.

As readers and writers, we have been developing our skills and understanding of recount writing. Focusing on the purpose, structure and language features, we have been improving and editing our writing throughout the week. With the help of a checklist, we have been feeling pretty impressed with ourselves as we remembered to include an orientation, sequencing words, and detailed events written in the past tense. We have been working hard to add interesting adjectives and to make sure our recounts are in the correct order.
