Meet NSWEduChat: Your AI Learning Assistant

Helping our students learn, think and prepare for the future

Artificial Intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of our world, and learning how to use it safely, ethically and effectively is an important skill for our students.

The NSW Department of Education has developed NSWEduChat, a secure and education-focused generative AI tool available to NSW public school students from Year 5 to Year 12.

NSWEduChat has been specifically designed for education and provides students with a safer environment in which to explore how AI can support their learning.

📚 How can NSWEduChat help students?

Students can use NSWEduChat to:

✅ Understand difficult concepts – Ask it to explain a topic in a different way.

✅ Study and revise – Create practice questions, quizzes or revision activities.

✅ Develop ideas – Use it to brainstorm and explore different perspectives.

✅ Improve their writing – Ask for feedback on clarity, structure and expression.

✅ Learn independently – Ask questions and receive guidance that encourages them to explain their own thinking.

✅ Prepare for assessments – Use it to clarify concepts and test their understanding, when AI use is permitted for the task.

Importantly, NSWEduChat’s student mode is designed to encourage students to think and reason, rather than simply provide an answer. It can ask students questions and encourage them to explain their ideas.

🧠 AI should support thinking – not replace it

Students should remember:

ASK → THINK → CHECK → CREATE

AI can sometimes provide incorrect or incomplete information. Students must therefore check information, use their own judgement and speak with their teacher when they are unsure.

NSWEduChat should not be used to complete an assessment task when a teacher has said AI is not permitted. Where AI use is permitted for homework or assessment, students should follow their teacher’s instructions about acknowledging or citing their use of AI.

🔐 Why NSWEduChat?

NSWEduChat is owned and designed by the NSW Department of Education. It has been developed with security, privacy and student safety in mind. Department guidance states that data entered into NSWEduChat is secured, remains within the Department and is not used to train the tool. Students should still avoid entering sensitive or confidential information.

A message to our students

AI is not about finding the fastest way to get an answer. It is about learning how to ask better questions, think critically, check information and develop your own ideas.

Use NSWEduChat as a learning partner — not as a replacement for your own thinking.

Think. Question. Check. Create.

Teachers will continue to support students to engage with NSWEduChat in their classrooms where applicable.
