Japanese Excursion to the city

Our Year 9 Japanese students recently spent a day in the Melbourne CBD, immersing themselves in Japanese language and culture outside the classroom. The excursion combined adventure, teamwork, and cultural discovery as students took part in a Japanese-themed scavenger hunt, navigating the city using their language skills to complete challenges and find destinations.

From sampling delicious Japanese treats to exploring cultural shops and restaurants, the day offered students a real-world opportunity to apply what they’ve been learning in class while deepening their appreciation for Japan’s influence in Melbourne.

Here’s what some of our groups had to say about their experience:

Group 1

Today, we explored many different Japanese shops in the Melbourne CBD. They explored themes such as Japanese culture, Japanese foods and the Japanese language. We utilised our Japanese knowledge to translate directions for a scavenger hunt and had many stops along the way (photobooth and boba tea). The day was filled with plenty of fun, as well as lots of walking and photos that captured our lovely day.

Group 2

Our team did a scavenger hunt. It was really enjoyable because we got to roam around freely! Discovering all Melbourne has to offer regarding Japanese culture. We went to many shops, including Daiso, Pafu and so many others, doing different and unique tasks! Ending off with a delicious Japanese meal.

Group 3

Our day in the city was very eventful, with a goal of translating Japanese sentences to find different places in the city. We started off outside the Fed Square and then ran enthusiastically to Flinders St station, and then to various streets in the city, eventually leading to Emporium and Melbourne Central, finishing off in Flagstaff Gardens for a Japanese Lunch. What we thought was the most fun part of the day was being able to go to a bunch of different places which we likely wouldn’t have gone to otherwise, leading to finding new places to eat and shop in the city!
