Year 9 STEM Airport Excursion

On Wednesday 29 October, our Year 9 STEM students took part in an unforgettable excursion to Moorabbin Airport, where science and engineering truly came to life.
The day began with an exclusive tour of Moorabbin Flying Services, where students explored aircraft hangars, witnessed planes and helicopters landing and taking off while standing on the tarmac, learnt how planes achieve lift, turn and land, plus experienced the thrill of a real flight simulator and landing their plane at the airport. A highlight for many students was hearing directly from aviation professionals about pathways in flight training, maintenance, and air traffic control.
After lunch, overlooking the runway and observing even more planes landing and taking off, students visited the Australian National Aviation Museum, home to some of Australia’s rarest aircraft, including the Wirraway A20-10 and Douglas DC-3. Guided by David, a passionate museum volunteer, students explored how engineering innovation has shaped Australia’s aviation history. The students found this museum “incredible” with many having a chance to sit in an original TAA jet simulator and many other incredible aircraft.
The guide highlighted the museum is one of the few in the world where students can actually sit in the pilot seat!
The excursion perfectly linked classroom learning to real-world STEM applications, inspiring future pilots, engineers, and inventors. A huge thank you to our hosts at Moorabbin Flying Services and the Museum for providing such an inspiring, educational, and memorable day!
