Year 7 and 8 Wellbeing Workshop: Understanding Our “Mental Movies”
Recently, our Year 7 and 8 students participated in an engaging wellbeing workshop delivered by Toolbox Education, focusing on emotional regulation and self-awareness. The session encouraged students to explore how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are interconnected – and how developing skills to recognise and manage these can support positive wellbeing at school and beyond.
A key concept introduced during the workshop was that of “mental movies.” Students learned that our minds often replay past events or imagine future scenarios, just like a movie on repeat. These mental movies can influence how we feel and respond in the present. By learning to pause, observe, and reframe these thought patterns, students discovered practical strategies to manage stress, handle conflict, and approach challenges with calmness and clarity.
Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, Toolbox Education facilitators guided students to identify helpful tools for emotional regulation, including mindful breathing, positive self-talk, and grounding techniques. The workshop provided a supportive environment where students could share experiences, practise empathy, and build confidence in managing their emotional responses.
These sessions are a valuable opportunity for our Year 7 and 8 students to strengthen their emotional literacy and resilience. We’re proud of the openness and maturity they displayed and look forward to seeing them apply their new “toolbox” of strategies in everyday life, both inside and outside the classroom.
