Learning in Year 6

English
This term, students have been revising the structure and language features of persuasive texts, with a particular focus on developing strong rebuttals to opposing arguments. Students have explored how persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, emotive language and modality can strengthen their writing and help convince an audience.
Both Year 6 classes have now completed their Term 1 class novels and will begin studying the powerful historical novel 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman during Term 2. This rich text will support students in developing deeper comprehension skills including analysing, inferring and evaluating.
Our focus on historical narratives will complement the integrated unit on migration. Students will investigate the push and pull factors that influence why people migrate, while building empathy and understanding through stories of displacement, conflict and new beginnings.
Mathematics
Students have been consolidating their understanding of fractions by revising:
- adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators
- placing fractions correctly on a number line
- simplifying fractions to their lowest form.
Following this, students explored the properties of 3D shapes including prisms, pyramids and cubes. Through engaging hands-on activities using playdough, students investigated cross-sections by slicing shapes such as cubes, triangular prisms and rectangular prisms to discover the 2D shapes formed inside 3D objects.
Extra-Curricular Activities
The Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed working alongside their buddies to complete a special Mother’s Day activity. It was wonderful to see the care, teamwork and enthusiasm shared between the students.
Students also attended an informative cybersafety session conducted by Victoria Police. The session focused on helping students stay safe online, recognise potential risks and make responsible digital choices.
Interschool sport practice has officially begun, with students enthusiastically preparing for the upcoming Gala Days in:
- Netball
- Lawn Bowls
- Softball
- AFL
- Soccer
Touch Football
Camp
The Year 6 students had an amazing time at Campaspe Downs in Tylden, where they participated in a range of exciting and adventurous activities. Students rotated through challenges including abseiling, the flying fox, giant swing and many team-building experiences that encouraged resilience, confidence and cooperation.
Camp provided students with wonderful opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, support one another and create lasting memories with their peers. The enthusiasm, courage and positive attitude displayed by the students throughout the camp experience were outstanding.
