Learning in Year 1

Hello!

We have had a wonderful start to Term 2, filled with lots of learning, special events, and exciting experiences. This term has already been packed with fantastic milestones, adventures, and opportunities for students to grow. Read on to see what Grade 1 has been up to!

Important Dates

Thursday 28th May: 2nd Community Walk

Friday 5th June: Curriculum Day (student free day)

Monday 8th June: King’s Birthday public holiday

Friday June 26th: Last day of Term 2, 2.30pm finish

Literacy

Over the last few weeks, Grade 1 students have been exploring persuasive texts. We have been reading a variety of persuasive pieces, discussing their key features, and creating our own persuasive writing. Students have been learning the difference between facts and opinions, as well as how to use convincing language to express and support their ideas effectively.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been learning about measurement. Students have enjoyed exploring length, mass, and capacity using a range of formal and informal measurement tools. Alongside measuring, we have also been making predictions and ordering different items based on their attributes. The hands-on nature of this topic has been a highlight, with students particularly enjoying using balance scales and investigating capacity through activities in the sandpit.

Integrated Studies

Students have been highly engaged in our Integrated Studies unit, My Place. We have enjoyed learning about our local history, including Indigenous history, the orchards that once thrived in Heathmont, and the history of our own school. Students had a fantastic time on our first community walk, where they identified local features and explored natural, constructed (man-made), and managed environments. A definite highlight was visiting the playground at Ringwood Lake! We were incredibly impressed by the students’ enthusiastic participation, curiosity, and excellent behaviour, and we are looking forward to our next walk.

Wellbeing

During our weekly wellbeing sessions, we have continued to focus on the important school value of respect. Students have been exploring what respect looks like in action, including valuing each other’s differences, supporting one another, and asking for help when needed. A variety of fun and engaging games have been used to reinforce these important concepts.

Thank you for your continued support so far this term.
