From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 families!

We all needed that lovely long weekend, and we hope you enjoyed some family time!

Thank you all for booking in for Learning Conversations. We have enjoyed celebrating the successes of your child with you, and pinpointing areas for development.

Take Home Readers - Please remember, students are to return their blue reader satchels and log books every FRIDAY.

 Literacy

Our tricky words we have learnt and will continue to learn are:  said, are, her, was, very, you, put, have, were, here, what, want, they, where, some, should, would, could, saw, friend, school  ⭐ If you are looking for a challenge at home or some extra learning, please practise spelling these tricky words! ⭐

In our Reading lessons we have explored compound words and nouns. We have also continued to practise: tricky words, our fluency skills and our accuracy skills, daily.

We have been exploring and extendeding our Writing skills over this past fortnight! Last week we looked at writing a story or recount with a beginning, middle and end. We used our inspiration from the beautiful picture story, The Pencil by Allan Ahlberg. We also used ‘transitional words’ such as First, Then, Next, Finally, when writing a personal recount. We then had a go at writing a procedural text. Over the next week we will explore the WHO, ACTION, OBJECT, WHERE parts of a sentence. These are called ‘4 PART’ sentences.

Maths-

We have continued to deepen our understanding of Place Value. We have worked hard using various materials to make, model and partition two and three digit numbers. We have used number lines to help further our understanding of where numbers belong according to their value. This week we will move into partitioning (breaking apart) collections then transferring this knowledge to create number bonds. Eg I know that 10 can be partitioned into 4 and 6, I can represent it like this:

We have also been working hard on counting to at least 120, forwards and backwards! Counting backwards can be tricky so we have practised this a lot.

Religion – Lent and Easter

We will continue to learn about Lent and Easter as a special time in our church calendar. We will also learn about the significance of St Pats Day!

Inquiry

This week we have explored the different ‘natural’ and ‘built’ environments we use to keep our bodies and minds active and healthy!
