From the Year 6 Classroom

Dear Year 6 Families,
Where has the time gone!!! It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of term one. We have had a busy few weeks, with lots happening both in and out of the classroom.
In Reading, we have started reading the novel ‘A Silver Donkey’. Set in wartime Australia, this novel follows a young girl who befriends a mysterious injured soldier hiding in the bush. As she learns his secret, themes of courage, loyalty, and compassion are explored in a powerful and moving way. The students have been engaging in thoughtful discussions and responding to the text through written and creative activities.
In Writing, we are beginning our fable writing, which is a short story with a moral. Often, the characters in a fable are animals. We are focusing on developing characters, the setting, using a variety of engaging story openings.
A fable is a short, fictional story that is used to entertain, but most importantly teach a moral or important human life lesson.
In Mathematics we are in the middle of our Order of Operations unit. We are using the BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) strategy to solve expressions. We have a daily focus on our times tables. Regular practice at home (even just 5–10 minutes a day) will make a big difference to their confidence and success in this area.
In Inquiry, students are beginning a new unit, ‘Sudden and Extreme Changes to Earth’s Surface’, where they will investigate major geological and extreme weather-related events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, drought, bushfires, floods and cyclones.
In Religion, we are in the midst of our Lenten unit, where students are learning about the meaning of Lent as a time of reflection, prayer, and preparation for Easter. We have been discussing ways we can show kindness, make positive choices, and think about how our actions affect others. Students are encouraged to consider small sacrifices or acts of service they can offer during this season.
Sport
We wish all students competing in the Divisional Swimming the very best of luck. We are proud of you forgiving it a go and representing our school!
Reminders
- A reminder of the importance of wearing correct school uniform each day. It helps promote pride in our school and sets a positive tone for learning.
- Reading Diaries: Please ensure diaries are brought in on Friday to have reading signed off. We recommend 4-5 nights of reading for at least 20mins.
Friday 20th - Ride2School Day & World Down Syndrome Day and we will be attending Mass.
Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. It is wonderful to see the students continuing to grow in confidence and independence as we move through the term.
Kind regards,
Year 6 Teachers
