Year 5 Highlight

Every Friday in Maths, our classroom transforms into a vibrant space for hands-on discovery as we dive into Application Lessons. These weekly sessions are designed to deepen understanding, enhance engagement, and consolidate the learning that has taken place throughout the week. Rather than simply revisiting concepts, students apply their knowledge in meaningful, real world ways. Whether working collaboratively or independently, they are encouraged to think critically, problem solve creatively, and explain their reasoning with confidence. These Fridays have quickly become a highlight, as students take ownership of their learning and see how Maths connects beyond the textbook.
Recently, students stepped into the role of mathematicians by creating their own survey questions, collecting responses using tally marks, and analysing their data. The following week, they brought their findings to life by representing the information in creative ways, including building dot plots and line graphs using only natural materials such as sticks and rocks. This hands-on approach has strengthened their understanding of data representation while fostering teamwork, creativity, and deeper mathematical thinking. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and growth our students are demonstrating as they apply their skills in purposeful and engaging ways each Friday.
