Learning in Year 1

What a busy term it has been! Despite having lots on, we are having so much fun growing, learning and exploring in Grade 1. The term has already been jam-packed with exciting learning experiences and adventures. Read on to find out what Grade 1 has been up to!

Please note: Swimming will not take place on Thursday 3rd September due to District Athletics.

Literacy

Over the past few weeks, Grade 1 students have continued to explore narratives. They have had so much fun brainstorming and creating their own stories, using skills they have learnt to make them even better. It’s been lovely to see students highly engaged with story writing and sharing their stories with classmates.

We continue to read and learn about creepy-crawly critters during our daily reading sessions. Students have been discovering interesting facts about a variety of insects, including what they look like and some of their unique characteristics. We have loved learning about the amazing bugs that can be found all around us!

We have also been working hard on our phonograms, learning a new one each week. A few weeks ago, we learnt the biggest one of them all – ‘ough’! Ask your child if they can remember the six sounds of ‘ough’.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been learning about repeating patterns, skip counting and the connection between the two. Students have enjoyed finding, copying and creating a variety of patterns. They have worked hard to identify the pattern stem (for example, square, circle, triangle) and independently continue and create repeating patterns.

This then led into learning about skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as they develop these important foundational Maths skills.

Integrated Studies

Students have been highly engaged in our Integrated Studies unit, Creepy-Crawly Critters. We have integrated this topic into our daily reading sessions, and students have loved learning about a variety of fascinating bugs, including bees, ants and butterflies.

Through our learning, students have been developing their knowledge and understanding of the world around them while discovering just how interesting and important these tiny creatures can be! A highlight was our excursion to the Botanical Gardens where we learnt more about creepy crawlies and watched them in their own habitat. The weather was perfect and the kids amazing. We were so proud of them.

Wellbeing

During our weekly Wellbeing sessions, we have continued to focus on fairness. Students have been exploring what it means to be fair, what fairness looks and feels like, and how they can demonstrate fairness in their everyday interactions with others. We have used a variety of fun and engaging games and activities to reinforce these important concepts.
