Learning in Year 3
We can hardly believe that Term 3 is almost over! With two weeks of swimming ahead of us and our final week spent at camp, we have a very busy and exciting couple of weeks to look forward to.
Literacy
We have officially finished our class novel, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yeti! What a reading adventure it has been! With so many twists, turns and surprises, we have absolutely loved diving back into the world of The Nothing to See Here Hotel and following the hilarious adventures in the sequel. Alongside our novel study, we have also been learning more about the author, Steven Butler, through an author study. We have discovered more about his writing style, characters and the ways he creates stories that keep readers engaged and entertained.
Our writing focus has now shifted to narrative writing. Using animals as our theme, we are creating our own imaginative stories and learning how to bring them to life. We have been focusing on using a range of simple and compound sentences, as well as creating “sizzling starts” that grab the reader's attention from the very beginning.
Maths
Our mathematicians have been busy exploring mapping, compass directions and coordinates! We have been learning to navigate using North, South, East and West, as well as locating and describing positions using coordinates.
To put our skills into practice, students have enjoyed playing a few rounds of Battleship! This was a fun way to practise reading and plotting coordinates while developing our spatial thinking and problem-solving skills.
We have also continued to strengthen our addition and subtraction skills, working on different strategies to solve problems accurately and efficiently. Each day, we also take part in our Daily Maths Review, giving us the opportunity to revisit and consolidate concepts we have learned throughout the year.
It has been wonderful to see students building their confidence as they revisit familiar skills and apply their mathematical thinking in new ways!
Feather Fur and Fin
We are almost at the end of our Feather, Fur and Fin integrated unit, where we have been exploring the fascinating world of animals! Students have been discovering the features and characteristics of different types of animals, learning interesting facts and developing their understanding of the specialised language used to describe animals and their habitats.
A huge thank you to Daisy in 3A and her dad, Paul, for bringing in some of their amazing animals from home to share with the class! Their visit provided a wonderful opportunity for students to see animals up close, ask questions and continue to wonder and admire the incredible world around us and Daisy did an amazing job presenting her animals to us all.
Year 3 Camp 2026
Camp is fast approaching, and the Year 3 students and staff are getting very excited for this special experience!
All students attending camp have received an email link for dietary requirements. Please keep an eye on your inbox and complete the information as it requested as soon as possible. If you have not recieved this link please contact your classroom teacher to confirm your email.
A few important reminders as you get ready for camp:
- Medication must be brought to school on the morning of departure with the required medical form attached. This form will be provided to families the next few days.
- Please make sure all clothing and belongings are clearly labelled.
- Students will need to bring a soft bag rather than a hard suitcase.
- Don't forget a pillow slip, single fitted sheet and sleeping bag.
Most importantly, bring a keen sense of adventure and be ready for lots of fun!
The Year 3 students and staff are really looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience together. We can't wait to see the excitement, independence and memories that camp will bring!
