Year 6 English – Poetry

In English, our Year 6 students have been exploring the world of poetry, with a particular focus on free verse and ballads. Students have been learning how to analyse poems and identify the powerful poetic devices poets use to communicate ideas, emotions and messages.

Through our poetry study, students have explored devices such as metaphor, simile, personification, imagery, symbolism, repetition, rhyme and onomatopoeia. They have considered how these techniques influence the reader and help bring a poet’s message to life.

Students will now have the opportunity to become poets themselves! They will write their own free verse poem and ballad, using the lens of global social justice issues. Students will select an issue that is meaningful to them and use poetic language and devices to raise awareness, evoke emotion and encourage readers to think deeply about fairness, equality and the world around us.

We are looking forward to seeing our students use their creativity, empathy and powerful voices to share important messages through poetry.

Year 6 Mathematics – Decimals, Money and Measurement

In Mathematics, our Year 6 students have been developing their understanding of decimals and their application to real-life money contexts. Students have been calculating percentage discounts, determining the amount saved and then working out the final cost at checkout. These activities have provided opportunities for students to apply their mathematical knowledge to practical, everyday situations.

This week, students have also been exploring units of measurement and learning how to convert between different units for length, capacity, volume and mass. Students have been developing their ability to select appropriate units, recognise relationships between units and accurately convert measurements.

It has been wonderful to see students applying their mathematical thinking to increasingly complex and practical problems.

Year 6 Integrated Studies – Global Social Justice

This term, our Year 6 students have been exploring the important and thought-provoking topic of global social justice. Students have investigated a range of issues affecting children and communities around the world, including access to clean water, poverty, inequality, hunger and malnutrition, access to medicine and access to education.

Through our learning, students have developed a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by others and have considered how individuals, communities and organisations can work together to create positive change. They have been encouraged to think critically about fairness, equality, human rights and their own capacity to make a difference.

Later in the term, our students will put their learning into action by holding a Bizarre Bazaar. This exciting event will provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills while raising money for a global charity supporting people in need.

We are incredibly proud of the empathy and compassion our students are developing as they learn that even small actions can create meaningful change.
