Exploring Memories, Families and Connections in Grade 1 and 2
Our Grade 1 and 2 students have begun exploring the beautiful picture book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox and illustrated by Julie Vivas.
Students were introduced to author Mem Fox and explored some of her well-loved books, many of which we are sure families have enjoyed reading together. Students learned that Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge was inspired by Mem Fox’s own grandfather and that the story explores the theme of memories and memory loss.
Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge lives next door to a nursing home. When he finds out that his special friend, Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper is losing her memory, he sets out to find what a memory is.
Students closely explored the illustrations and characters in the book. They chose one of the characters in the book to describe.
Through this engaging unit, students have been learning about the importance of memories and how they connect people across generations. They have explored how memories can be linked to special objects, feelings, people and experiences. They have learnt how memories help us tell our stories, remember important moments and stay connected to family and community, linking closely with our Integrated Unit, Through Generations.
We look forward to continuing our exploration of this wonderful story!
