In Performing Arts, students across the school are continuing their musical journey through Gustav Holst’s The Planets. We have now met Mercury and Jupiter, each with their own musical personality:

  • Mercury: fast, light and playful. Holst paints Mercury as a quick messenger darting around the orchestra, full of flickers, surprises and sudden changes.
  • Jupiter: joyful, bold and expansive. This movement bursts with energy, big melodies and a sense of celebration.

Students are exploring how composers use tempo, dynamics and instrumentation to express character, and they are beginning to describe what each planet feels like through sound, movement and discussion.

A major focus this term is understanding how ensembles work. Students are learning what it means to be an active, responsible member of a group.  That involves listening closely, moving together, and contributing with purpose. These skills connect directly to our BPPS values:

  • Respect: listening to others and valuing every contribution
  • Care: encouraging peers and creating a safe, positive space
  • Responsibility: knowing your role and committing to it
  • Inclusion: ensuring everyone can participate and feel part of the ensemble

Through The Planets, students are discovering that great ensembles, like great communities, are built on cooperation, focus and shared purpose. We look forward to meeting more planets as our musical adventure continues.
