Foundation

Each week foundation students investigate a new number. We introduce this number by discussing what this number looks like and how it can be represented i.e. tally marks, on dice and in a number frame. We also discuss where we can see that number in the room or other findings of that number i.e. a triangle has three corners, a spider has 8 legs and Alvis has four fish.
We then continue this knowledge in our number book. Here we practice how to write the number in numerical and worded form. We demonstrate how it is represented in a number frame. We also practice our understanding of ordinality, knowing what fifth place looks like.
We then do speedy numeracy rotations for the students to investigate the number of the week further. They may do a number hunt, practice writing the worded number with letter magnets or create the number with play dough.
The final task of the number investigation is creating a thinkboard. They combine all their knowledge they have gained from their lesson and show different ways to represent the number.
During term 2, we have specifically been focusing on describing the location of an object. We practiced using positional language like behind, next to, under and above through different collaborative activities. One activity involved one student drawing a picture and describing that picture to their partner. Based on the description and positional language they would have to try and recreate the picture. They would then compare the two drawings to see how well they used descriptive language.
