Elements of Learning

Within the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0, the element of Attention, Focus and Regulation highlights the importance of supporting students to manage their attention, emotions and behaviour so they are ready to learn.
This includes creating predictable routines, fostering positive relationships and explicitly teaching strategies that help students sustain focus, self-regulate and engage successfully in learning tasks. By strengthening these skills, students are better equipped to participate confidently, persist through challenges and develop independence as learners.
To support a strong learning culture at school and home, parents are encouraged to:
- Establish clear and predictable routines that help children feel safe, organised and ready to learn.
- Explicit teaching of self-regulation strategies, mindfulness, breathing techniques and recognising emotions.
- Consistent at home expectations and visual supports to reduce cognitive load and support independence.
- Brain breaks and movement opportunities to help children maintain concentration and manage energy levels.
- Adjust learning at home to support pacing.
- Collaboration with the school and wellbeing staff to provide consistent support for children across school and home environments.
