Principal's Report

Spring can be temperamental in Melbourne, and this year is no exception; we have had some beautiful days with sunshine and warmth, and other days when I shiver with cold as I get to school in the morning. One of my colleagues here at THS has very kindly leant me a beginner’s B-flat clarinet, and a new routine for me this term has been to practise the clarinet for ten minutes in the morning when I arrive at work at 7.20am. At that time of the day, there are very few staff members here but twice each week I see our Sports Academy students here, ready for their strength and fitness sessions in the Gym with staff from La Trobe University. I appreciate the value of dedication and discipline, and recognise the effort it takes for our young students to get up that early in the morning to work on their fitness!

Thornbury High School has been a very busy place in the second half of this term, with a great number of events and activities for students to take part in and enjoy. From Science Week to Book Week to Health/PE Week, our staff members planned and ran a number of fantastic events for students, who really embraced these opportunities with commitment and enthusiasm.

A group of 40 intrepid students and staff members spent time at Mt Buller for our Snow Camp, with everyone making the most out of the chance to ski and snowboard on the slopes. Thank you to Ms Cara Martin for her leadership on this trip, and to all the staff members who attended to support our students.

Many of our THS students have represented the school in various sports events this term, and I would like to congratulate all of them on their sportsmanship and their commitment to fair play and excellence in their respective sports. In particular, it is worth mentioning the efforts of our athletes who took part in the Northern Metro Region Athletics Carnival earlier this month, winning a total of 13 gold medals and qualifying for State Championships in October. Well done to all the students involved, and thank you to our Sports Coordinator, Mr Patrick Sowersby, for supporting the students!

As we head off into the holiday period, I encourage students to consider borrowing a book from the THS school library to read during the break. For me, I’m starting to re-read a novel I first read as a Year 11 student back in Sweden: Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. It’s a very entertaining Russian classic - highly recommended!
