THS Estimation Championship

Last week, the Maths Department ran the first ever Thornbury High School Estimation Championship. This saw around 50 students give up their lunchtime to put their gut instincts to the test completing challenges designed by Mr Broadby. The challenges ranged from the classic how many jellybeans in the jar? To the more niche; how much did Mr McDowell's house cost, how many litres of milk would fill the school gym, and how many Dr Anderssons stacked on top of one another would reach the International Space Station.

Each round rewarded the closest estimate with a bag of lollies or a pack of Pokémon cards, but the main prize, a jar of 1417 jellybeans, went to the student with the most consistently accurate estimations overall. Congratulations to Edwin Maplestone, our inaugural champion, who proved that estimation is less about luck and more about a sharp eye.

Edwin will be back next year to defend his title, when the competition looks set to be bigger and even harder to guess. See you all there for round two.
