Music at Strathmore 

Music Camp 

In week 6, music students from all year levels went to Rutherford Park Country Retreat near Daylesford for music camp. It was a great opportunity to allow students to come together to learn and develop greater skills in performing and musicianship. 

Here is what some students said: 

As the choir we learnt songs like 'From The Start', 'Try Everything' and 'Song Of Purple Summer', We also learnt some other new songs but those were my favourite. we spent 11 hours and Mel and Shai were both helping us, Shai was playing the piano for us and Mel was giving us notes. Honestly the rehearsals went by so fast and it was a roller coaster of emotions - one time I was happy and excited and other half was tied but still had my adrenaline up my favourite moment was when we were blowing bubbles into our cups of water with straws and Stew was pretending to be a walrus. In the end all our hard work was worth it when we had a concert and shared the songs 'Children Will Listen', 'From The Start' and 'Try Everything' all the other people at music camp were so talented and I loved all the songs everyone shared.

Music camp was really fun, as always. It was several hours of classes every day and every second was awesome, even though it was technically work. I can’t speak for the other instruments but for the choir we did a lot of games and silly warmups. One of the activities was quite literally using a straw to blow bubbles in water. 

The lessons flew by, and there was quite a bit of time to relax and just hang out with friends with free range of the rooms. 

The teachers and older students make sure to organise nighttime activities every year as well, so this year there was a live band playing for us the first night, and trivia and the red faces talent show on the second night as always. On the third day there’s also a presentation of what each ensemble did throughout the trip and the performances were particularly good this year; it’s so cool and fascinating to see what the other classes do all day. 

Also, more importantly than any of that, the food is delicious, and there’s SO MUCH OF IT. They genuinely fed us like five times a day. Anyway, just a generally enjoyable and beneficial experience. I felt like I was just having fun the whole time, and yet I also got to take away a lot.

Jazz Night and Chamber Concert 

Strathmore Secondary College's Jazz Night & Chamber Concerts brought out some brilliant performances, with ensembles and soloists serving up everything from jazz standards to chamber classics.

A big thank you to all the families and community members who packed the audience, your support made both evenings a huge success. A massive well done to our performers for all the rehearsal time and effort that went into it.

A special shout out to our graduating Year 12 musicians — this was your final Jazz Night & Chamber Concert with us, and what a way to go out. Thank you for everything you've brought to the Music program over the years; we'll miss having you on stage.
