Message from the School Captains
I thought I would take this opportunity to talk about what has really enriched my high schooling experience: debating and public speaking. In the instance that either an encouraging parent or aspiring student reads this section of the newsletter, I would like to implore both to embrace the public speaking opportunities at SSC, as much as possible. Under the primary tuition of Mr Bassios, I was encouraged in Year 9 to join Strathmore Secondary College 1 (the debate team that myself, Andreas Oltoumis and Joseph Price — both fellow Year 12 students — have debated on over the last 4 years). Notably, as of writing this, we are about to enter the semifinals of the Victorian State Debating Competition, meaning we are one of four teams left in the state to still be competing. This is an unprecedented stage of the competition for us, and we feel so privileged to be given the exhilarating opportunity (approximately once a month) to put our critical thinking and oratory skills to the test. In addition, I competed in the Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) in 2025 and 2026, which has been an invaluable experience, both in relation to furthering my skill, but also to meet other public speakers from other schools. Hence, I truly implore all students, even if they only have a slight interest, to give it a go! We need to show all of the private schools what government schools have the ability to do, and achieve!

On 10 September, Strathmore Secondary College celebrated R U OK? Day, providing students with an opportunity to participate in a raffle, purchase cupcakes and enjoy lolly bags. All proceeds were donated to Headspace, making the event a great success while supporting an important cause. Students also had the chance to win prizes, creating a fun and supportive environment and a special congratulation to all the winners.
In the first week back after the Term 3 break, Strathmore will be holding the Colour Run, along with a sausage sizzle on Friday the 9th of October. The Colour Run is an opportunity for students and staff to relax, have fun and connect after a busy week. We encourage everyone to get involved, as events like these help strengthen student–teacher relationships. It is important that school events are not only supported by students, but also by staff, as coming together as a whole school community helps build stronger connections and a greater sense of belonging.
As a reminder, please bring a shirt that you are comfortable getting colourful! Most importantly, come along, have fun and get ready to get colourful!

As our time as captains comes to an end, Joseph, Keira and I would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the privilege of serving as your 2026 VCE School Captains at Strathmore Secondary College. Throughout this year, we have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside our Principal, Sue Prosenica, in her first year at the school, and to contribute to a year filled with memorable milestones and celebrations. In particular, being part of the celebrations for the Victorian Space Science Education Centre 20th anniversary here at Strathmore was a true honour and reminder to stay grateful for the curiosity, learning, and achievements that continue to define the excellence within the centre.
It has been a privilege to be involved in leadership throughout our years at this school. To learn from the incredible captains who came before us, and to now work alongside a leadership team that has made this year so meaningful. To the teachers involved in leadership, and to those who have consistently recognised, encouraged and supported us in our roles, thank you. Your unwavering support has given us the confidence and freedom to grow, to take initiative, and to flourish as leaders. To our peers and to all the students of this school, thank you for allowing us to represent you. We hope that the events and initiatives we have helped create have strengthened your sense of community, brought people together, and perhaps inspired more of you to see leadership as an opportunity to contribute, rather than simply a position to hold.
To the Junior & Senior School Councils, Ms Martucci & Ms Wilkinson, thank you for standing beside us through every challenge and triumph this year. Your willingness to help, your perspective, and your ability to remain grounded have been invaluable. We could not have done this without you.
To the future captains of SSC, we hope you remain curious, lead with the intention to learn, approach every opportunity with strength and pride, and acknowledge everyone as an equal to you.
As we look towards what comes next in preparation for graduation and final exams, we wish our class of 2026 nothing but the very best. We hope you approach the future with confidence, curiosity and courage.
Finally, thank you to our Strathmore community for allowing us to serve, to learn, and to lead. It has been an honour we will carry with us long after we leave these school grounds.
