Year One

Dear Year One Families,
This week in Year One, students continued building their literacy and numeracy skills, through engaging learning experiences across Reading, Writing, Phonics, and Mathematics. We are very proud of the effort students are showing during independent and group learning tasks.
Reading
In Reading, students explored features of non-fiction texts and learnt about the purpose of an index. They practised locating an index in books and using it to find information quickly and efficiently. Students also worked on identifying facts and opinions in non-fiction texts and discussed how facts can be proven, while opinions share personal feelings or ideas.
Phonics
In Phonics, students focused on the ‘tr’ sound and practised reading, segmenting, and blending words such as train, truck, tree, and trip. They also learnt about flipping the vowel sound when reading unfamiliar words to help make sense of sentences while reading independently.
Writing
In Writing, students continued planning and writing their information reports about the Sun or the Moon. They worked on organising information under subheadings, writing paragraphs, including fun facts, and creating labelled diagrams. Students also practised revising and editing their writing using punctuation, spelling, and sentence checks.
Maths
In Mathematics, students explored the concept of duration and learnt about months, years, and decades. They discussed activities that take different lengths of time and practised estimating how long tasks would take using sand timers. Students also compared activities from the shortest to the longest duration and shared their thinking with classmates.
We have enjoyed seeing students grow in confidence and independence throughout their learning this week.
