Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,

We are delighted to share the wonderful learning experiences from this fortnight. It has been amazing to watch our students explore the beauty of nature and express their creativity with confidence. Their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment as thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers have made this a rich and meaningful learning experience for all.

Reading:

In Reading, Year 3 students are exploring how language helps us understand the feelings and ideas of an author. They are closely examining texts to see how word choices, descriptions, and language features shape meaning and create mood for the reader. Students are also developing their ability to find evidence in the text to support their thinking by identifying specific words, phrases, and sentences that explain their interpretations and deepen their understanding. As part of their Inquiry action piece, many students chose to explore found poetry, which we have been studying throughout the term. Students used words and phrases from existing texts to create original poems, experimenting with language, meaning, and creativity. Through this process, they developed a deeper understanding of how authors carefully choose words to express ideas and emotions in powerful ways.

Writing:

In Writing, students engaged in creative and reflective writing. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, they selected topics from nature to compose poems and songs and used descriptive language and poetic devices to give life to their ideas. Students followed the writing process to publish their work.

Students also wrote reflective pieces about their project, highlighting their successes, challenges, and key learnings throughout the unit. This encouraged them to think about their learning journey as writers and learners.

Maths:

In Mathematics, students have been developing and extending their understanding of 2D and 3D shapes by identifying and explaining key features such as faces, edges, and vertices. They explored a range of shapes and used them to create tessellations and both symmetrical and non-symmetrical patterns, deepening their understanding of how designs can be organised and structured. Students also learned about lines of symmetry and identified them within different shapes and patterns. Through this hands-on work, they carefully observed how shapes fit together, repeat, and form patterns, strengthening their spatial awareness and geometric thinking. Students have also been continuing to explore fluency tasks to master their number skills.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students completed their final action project for the unit “Patterns and colours in nature inspire creativity.” Using the knowledge they developed throughout the unit, they created and presented a poem or song to express the beauty of nature. Students also explored collage as an art form, investigating how artists and authors use a variety of materials to create meaning and visual impact in their work. They then proudly exhibited their final pieces to parents and peers, combining their learning about nature, language, and art while sharing their learning journey and celebrating their creativity through thoughtful and engaging presentations.
