Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,
What a wonderful fortnight of learning we have had in Year Two! Students have shown great curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm across all learning areas. We would also like to thank all the families who joined us during Education Week. It was fantastic to welcome you into our classrooms and celebrate learning together.
Reading
In Reading, students continued developing their comprehension skills by asking questions before, during and after reading. In Week 5, students explored the text Beegu by Alexis Deacon, sharing their wonderings and predictions about the story and characters using visual clues from the text.
In Week 6, students began exploring our new class novel Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. Students discussed character traits, explored descriptive settings and practiced predicting events in the story.
Writing & Spelling
In Writing, students reviewed nouns and explored action verbs through a range of mentor texts and activities. They practiced identifying verbs within texts and using them in their own sentences.
Students also explored how characters can change throughout a story through the text Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat by Steven Michael King.
In Spelling, students focused on past tense spelling rules using the -ed suffix, as well as plural spelling patterns in Week 6. Students practiced applying these spelling patterns during their independent writing tasks.
To acknowledge National Sorry Day, students read Stolen Girl and created handprint crafts.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students continued developing their addition and subtraction strategies.
In Week 5, students explored open number lines to solve addition problems and practiced doubles facts using counters and ten frames. Students also applied their learning to real-world word problems.
In Week 6, students focused on subtraction strategies by partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. Students used place value charts to practice subtracting 10 and 100 from larger numbers, while extension groups challenged themselves with more complex subtraction problems.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students continued exploring the properties and uses of materials. Using EPIC! Books on their iPads, students researched materials such as glass and iron and learned new vocabulary including transparent. They created mind maps to organise their learning and discuss why certain materials are useful in everyday life.
In Week 6, students also launched our new Unit of Inquiry under the theme “Sharing the Planet.” Students explored different creation stories and discussed how people and cultures share and care for the world around them.
Wellbeing
Across both weeks, students explored positive coping strategies and respectful ways to solve problems. Students practiced calming strategies including deep breathing, hand pressing and counting slowly to ten to help manage strong emotions.
Thank you again for your continued support throughout the term.
Warm regards,
The Year Two Teaching Team
