Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

We had a couple busy weeks in Year Five, from Athletics Carnival, to school photos, to Education Week, and our Scienceworks trip for our classes.

Literacy

Year Five Students have been actively developing their literacy skills through a range of engaging activities. They practised summarising and analysing texts, helping them understand key ideas more deeply.

Students also began book club sessions where they chose their preferred books, discussed routines and agreements and the expectations around book club meetings.

In Writing, Students explored perspective by creating stories that ranged from logical to mythical. They analysed cultural performances and created poems inspired by what they observed. They also completed quick writes using picture prompts linked to culture, encouraging creativity and thoughtful expression across different forms of learning.

Mathematics

Over the past two weeks, Year Five Students have been learning about factors and multiples of natural numbers.

They built their understanding of number relationships by exploring how multiplication and division are inverse operations, and used this knowledge to find related number facts.

Students practised efficient mental and written strategies to solve multiplication and division problems with increasing confidence.

Inquiry

In our Unit of Inquiry, Year Five Students explored how cultural stories teach important lessons, values, and survival skills. They examined how these stories have been shaped by the local environment, and the impacts of colonisation on this oral tradition.

As a culminating task, students completed a passion project connected to these themes, allowing them to explore an area of personal interest. They demonstrated thoughtful reflection, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the power of storytelling.

Athletics

Our Athletics day was a fun and energetic event for all Year Five Students. They rotated in their groups between exciting track events (100-metre sprint, hurdles, 200-metre sprint and longer distance runs of 800-metres). Students showed great speed and determination as they raced towards the finish line, cheered on by their classmates.

Students also had the opportunity to give field events a go. They participated in long jump, triple jump, high jump, and shot put, testing their strength, balance, and coordination. Many students were proud of their efforts and even surprised themselves with how well they performed.

Throughout the day, team spirit was strong, with everyone encouraging and supporting one another. We are extremely proud of all the students who showed up with open mindedness, gave all events a go and with good spirits as well.

Education Week

During Education Week, Year Five Students enjoyed welcoming their parents into the classroom to observe their learning.

Students participated in lessons while showing their work, skills, and classroom routines. It was a great opportunity to share what they have been learning and feel proud of their progress.

Parents enjoyed seeing how lessons run and how engaged the students were. The classroom was full of excitement, confidence, and a strong sense of community.

Scienceworks Excursion

Over this fortnight, we enjoyed an engaging and educational excursion to the Scienceworks Museum in Melbourne.

Students explored interactive exhibits that helped them understand different forms of energy and how energy is used in everyday life. The highlight of this section was when we observed electricity generated behind the cage bars using the 'Tesla coil'.

Students also visited the Planetarium, where they learned about stars and constellations in the Southern Hemisphere. A special highlight was learning about cultural stories, including Aboriginal perspectives on the night sky, which links to our Inquiry on cultural stories and deepened their understanding of how knowledge of the stars has been shared for generations.

The excursion was both fun and meaningful, sparking curiosity and creating links between students’ knowledge of cultural stories and new learning.

We look forward to seeing what the next fortnight of learning brings for our stude
