Year Four

It is hard to believe we are already well into Term Two! Students have settled back into their routines beautifully, bringing wonderful energy and enthusiasm to their learning each day.

How We Express Ourselves

We have launched into our new Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. Our central idea is that media can be a powerful tool that influences thinking. Over the course of this inquiry, students will engage in a range of lessons that explore the different forms of media and the factors that shape the way we think, respond, and form opinions. We are excited to see the rich discussions and discoveries that lie ahead.

Literacy

In reading, students have been exploring how images can be manipulated to shape the way we think and feel, developing their ability to make inferences and understand how media can influence an audience. We analysed advertisements, examining how the use of colour, logos, and design choices are carefully crafted to evoke particular emotions and responses in viewers. To extend this thinking further, students listened to the same song performed by different artists and reflected on how tone, word choice, and an artist's unique voice can shift the way an audience feels, deepening their understanding of voice in writing.

In writing, students have been collecting seeds - moments from their own lives when they have persuaded someone of something. We are beginning to explore the structure of a persuasive text, and students are already brimming with ideas and strong opinions ready to be shaped into compelling writing pieces.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students have been building their understanding of probability. They created probability lines and explored the concept of mutually exclusive events, developing the language and reasoning needed to describe chance. We have since begun our multiplication unit, where students are investigating a range of multiplicative strategies, including multiplying by tens, breaking numbers intohundreds, tens andones and multiplying each part separately, and using arrays to solve worded problems. It has been fantastic to see students making connections between strategies and choosing approaches that work best for them.

Week 5 was a wonderful celebration of learning together. We were delighted to welcome a huge number of parents, carers, and grandparents into our classrooms, giving them the opportunity to observe authentic teaching and learning and to participate alongside their children in literacy, numeracy and inquiry activities. These experiences highlighted the importance of strong partnerships between home and school, and it was truly encouraging to see so many positive conversations and meaningful engagement throughout the week. Thank you sincerely to all the families who visited. Your presence makes such a difference. We look forward to creating further opportunities for parents and volunteers to be involved in the future.
