Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,

Over the past fortnight, students have continued exploring our Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, with a focus on how government systems support the rights of citizens. Students have been developing their understanding of Australia's political and legal systems while applying their learning through reading, writing and mathematics.

Reading

In Reading, students explored a range of texts related to government and democracy. They investigated the Westminster system, the separation of powers and the role of Parliament in Australia. Students examined how power is shared between different branches of government and why these systems are important in maintaining fairness and accountability.

Students also began learning about Australia's court system, exploring the different levels of courts and the roles of key individuals, including prosecutors and defendants. They developed their summarising, questioning and comprehension skills through texts focused on debates, parliamentary processes and member statements. Students analysed the purpose and message of different political texts and considered how communication can influence public opinion.

Writing

In Writing, students continued developing their persuasive writing skills. They explored a range of persuasive devices, including:

  • Pathos – appealing to emotions

  • Ethos – establishing credibility and trust

  • Logos – using logic and evidence

Students analysed examples of persuasive writing before selecting their own topics and planning persuasive arguments. Throughout the fortnight, they drafted, revised and edited their pieces, focusing on creating convincing arguments supported by strong evidence and persuasive techniques.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students continued their work in Statistics. They explored how data can be displayed, interpreted and analysed in different ways. Students compared the distribution of data displays and investigated how data is presented in the media.

Using Australian Census data, students examined population information from Point Cook and across Australia. They explored topics such as cultural diversity, country of birth, gender and migration patterns, identifying trends and drawing conclusions from real-world data. Students collected, organised and displayed data using tables, bar graphs and, for extension, pie charts. They also practised interpreting statistical information and explaining what the data revealed.

Unit of Inquiry

Our inquiry learning continued to focus on how governments and legal systems operate within society. Students deepened their understanding of democratic processes, the role of debates and how laws and decisions are made. Through examining real-world examples, students considered how government structures help support citizens and maintain order within communities.

Education Week and School Photos

Students enjoyed participating in activities throughout Education Week and had the opportunity to celebrate learning across the school. School Photos were also held during the fortnight, with students representing Saltwater proudly.

Government Incursion

Students participated in an engaging online Government Incursion, which further supported their understanding of democratic systems and government processes. The session provided valuable real-world connections to our current Unit of Inquiry and encouraged students to think critically about citizenship and participation in society.

Elephant Ed

Students participated in Elephant Ed sessions that linked closely to our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, where students explored how transitions in life shape who we are. The sessions supported students' understanding of the physical, emotional and social changes that occur as young people grow and develop. Through age-appropriate discussions about body safety, personal boundaries and puberty, students were encouraged to build their confidence, develop self-awareness and identify trusted adults who can support them through life's transitions. These sessions reinforced many of the concepts explored earlier in the year and provided students with valuable knowledge to support their wellbeing.
