Mini Vinnies Excursion

Mini Vinnies students were fortunate to visit the St Vincent de Paul headquarters in Canning Vale on Thursday, July 1st. During this insightful excursion, students learned about the rich history of the charity, which began in 1833 in Paris, France, founded by Frédéric Ozanam. The organisation was named after the patron saint of charities, St Vincent de Paul. 

Students explored the core values of Vinnies, including compassion, advocacy and empathy, and gained a deeper understanding of how these values are lived out in the community. A highlight of the visit was a tour of the warehouse, where students observed how donated items are sorted. These donations included clothes, bed linen, furniture and toys. Clothing collected in Vinnies shops is transported to the Canning Vale depot, where it is carefully organised by season, gender and size before being distributed to second-hand stores. Items that are not suitable for resale are thoughtfully repurposed, such as being made into bags of cleaning rags. 

The Mini Vinnies team also had the opportunity to take part in hands-on service by sorting a large quantity of donated clothing. In addition, they heard from a Financial Counsellor, an Events Organiser and an Emergency Assistance Coordinator, who shared insights about their roles and the impact of their work. Students asked thoughtful questions and were inspired by the dedication of these volunteers and staff. 

It was especially exciting to learn that $1.5 million was raised at this year’s CEO Sleepout, held at Perth Zoo. 

The visit concluded with a reminder that, as members of Mini Vinnies, students are part of something truly meaningful. Through their actions, they are living out the mission of doing Something Beautiful for God.
