End of Term 3 :
Food Technology
The Year 9 Food Studies students completed their first CAT, a design brief with a real-life application: developing and presenting an original, rich and fudgy brownie suitable for a local café or restaurant’s winter dessert menu.
The task required students to think beyond baking, considering how their dessert could be plated consistently, styled attractively and photographed for publication.
During the investigation stage, students researched food styling and plating techniques, including current trends, before sketching and annotating their own ideas. They considered colour, texture, garnish, composition and presentation to create a dessert suitable for both a chef’s plating reference and social media or magazine marketing.
The production phase challenged students to demonstrate time management and teamwork, completing their bake, plating, garnishing and photography within a 60-minute timeframe. Students then evaluated their final product against their design criteria using sensory testing, evaluation scales and peer feedback.
The project encouraged students to understand that successful food design involves much more than taste. They developed practical skills in baking, plating, styling, photography and evaluation, while experiencing the creative and time-sensitive demands of a professional food environment.
