Year 5/6 News

Hi All!
In Literacy, we have been reading our class novel Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. This week, students explored what life was like for children during the Industrial Revolution and the many hardships they faced, particularly in the workforce. They were especially shocked to learn about child exploitation and dangerous occupations such as chimney sweeping. Students have also been developing their writing skills by learning how to expand sentences using detailed noun groups.
In Mathematics, we have continued our Fractions unit, focusing on comparing and ordering fractions on a number line, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Throughout these lessons, students were encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, justify their answers, and select efficient strategies to support their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
In Religion, we held our first choir rehearsal with our new music teacher, Anna Di Simone. She will join us every second Wednesday to lead the Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 students in our liturgical choir program. It was wonderful to hear the students singing together and developing an understanding of the meaning and purpose behind the music they are learning.
In Inquiry, the Grade 6 students, accompanied by Miss Maddie, attended the 94th Annual ANZAC Student Commemoration Service at Shrine of Remembrance. The students proudly represented St Fidelis, demonstrating respectful behaviour and excellent conduct throughout the excursion.
Mother’s Day activities
Thank you to all the mums who attended our Mother’s Day Breakfast and then joined us in the classroom for some light-hearted activities. It was wonderful to see so many families sharing in the celebrations and spending time together.
