Year 3 News

Welcome to Week 4! To all the wonderful mothers and special women in our school community, we hope you enjoyed a relaxing and joy-filled Mothers Day weekend celebrating all that you do.
We’ve had another busy week of learning and fun in Year 3.
Stem Rocketry Incursion with Mr Frazzetto
On Monday last week, we started off with a bang, when we participated in a hands-on, engaging incursion designing and building rockets with Mr Frazzetto. As thinkers and collaborators, we worked together as a team and followed a design process to plan, build and launch our water bottle rockets. We also learnt about the science behind rocketry and expanded our vocabulary of technical words such as weight, thrust, force, mass and acceleration. We had a great time launching and comparing the speed and distance of our water rockets.
Religion
As a faith-filled community, we, along with grades 4-6, participated in our first liturgical singing lesson with Ms Anna Di Simone. We enjoyed the session and learnt two new songs. It was wonderful to deepen our understanding of how music can enrich prayer and celebration within the Church community.
Maths
As mathematicians, we have begun our Mathematics unit in length. We are exploring how to measure, compare and estimate lengths using formal units such as mm, cm and m, while developing our understanding through hands-on learning activities.
The Resilience Project
During our TRP lesson, we learnt that all emotions and feelings are important and helpful. We read a book called ‘Inside my Heart and in my Head …. Feelings’ by Libby Walden and we developed our awareness that some feelings are uncomfortable, challenging and painful; and some feelings are comfortable and feel ‘positive’. As writers and communicators, we described our different emotions using idioms and similes.
Inquiry
As thinkers, we participated in a Chalk Talk. This involved us quietly moving around the room to each poster with a marker to record all we know about various eras in Australian history including: The First Fleet, Eureka Stockade, Burke and Wills and the Kelly Gang. In another lesson, we used a Making Meaning Thinking Routine for the word EXPLORATION, to record our connections, wonderings, definitions, prior knowledge etc that we have about this topic in our workbooks.
Mothers Day morning
It was wonderful to welcome our mothers and special guests to our Mother’s Day Breakfast. We enjoyed sharing this special morning together and spending time with our mums in the classroom. We thank all the families who joined us and helped make the occasion so warm and memorable.
This week our learning will include:
- Numeracy: Length: mm, cm, m and km
- Literacy: Novel study: ‘Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon’ by Anita Heiss
- Writing: Writing a summary
- Spelling: The prefix ‘dis’ meaning ‘away’ or ‘negative’.
- Inquiry: Éxploration: How did it Shape Australia?
- Religion: The Road to Emmaus scripture story
- National Walk to School Day - Friday the 15th May (students to bring their own bowl and spoon)
Have a wonderful week!
