“I’ve started the second year of my Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) at Monash University. I absolutely love it! It’s a lot of work but it’s going to be worth it. My favourite part of my course is definitely anything Midwifery, especially the practical classes in the labs. My highlights have definitely been the COCE (continuity of care experience) where we get to follow women through their pregnancies. We get to form a relationship with them, going to their antenatal appointments, their birth (my favourite part) and their postnatal appoints. Even though it’s a lot of work, those COCE have made me realise I’m in the right place!”

“I’m in my second year of Law and Global Studies with a specialisation in Human Rights. I’m really enjoying it this year, I like all my units and being back on campus is great.

I have applied to undertake an intensive unit for two weeks at the end of the year in Prato, Italy at the Monash campus. So that’s something I’m looking forward to! I work part time in a café and I’ve also been tutoring secondary school students in Health and Human Development since the beginning of 2021, I love that as well! I’m volunteering for a Federal Greens candidate at the moment, for her campaign. I’ve found it really rewarding for sure and made great connections. My advice to current Parkdale students is to definitely aim for a degree that you already have interests in outside school (for me, human rights/politics was a big one and the Law is going to help my career choices and it also aligns well with the Global Studies). I’d say challenge yourself where necessary (like I did with last minute choosing Law!!). For anyone aiming for Law or Monash Law, I have met plenty of people who did not make the very high ATAR requirement for the course. They used a pathway and went into Arts, chose the first year law units as Arts electives, and achieved a 60% WAM (weighted average mark) to transfer into 2nd year Law the following year. It can be easier than people think to move around degrees and it did not take any extra time. It is reassuring for people who don’t make the ATAR and don’t want to spend extra time/money at uni.

Regardless, I’d tell my high school self to still try my best, because I wouldn’t have gotten the ATAR to even consider Law in the first place, I also learnt so much in VCE by taking it seriously."
