VCAL Update – March 2022

As part of their program, the Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have completed a day’s learning in the City. The Year 12s visited the State Library as part of their Skills for Further Study Unit, where they completed tours in groups and have collected information to bring back to assist them in their work on comparing two libraries as well as learning note taking and referencing techniques and being able to apply these effectively.

The Year 11s completed a Salvation Army Homeless Walk as part of their day’s program, which involved the students being briefed and shown around some of the key support services Melbourne has to offer. Prior to the day, the students were challenged to make a collection of donatable items for the Salvos and these were gratefully received upon arrival. Both groups also enjoyed attending ACMI to learn more about digital presentations and to collect artefacts using a ‘lens’ we will use back at school. The displays were amazing and the history of video games in Australia was definitely a hit!

As we near the end of term we excitedly wait to hear how our budding Zoos Victoria employees go with their day at the Zoo this coming holidays. This program was a fantastic opportunity open to students for sign up and we have some of our cohort who were keen and followed through on this.

I would like to welcome Jared Bandara as the incoming VCAL Coordinator at Parkdale Secondary College. Jared joins us with a wealth of experience in both teaching and coordinating VCAL and it has been wonderful to be able to welcome him to the VCAL team here at Parkdale Secondary College.

We will begin Term Two with a push on our ‘Big Projects’ across all classes in readiness for Assessment and Review week, with the highlight being our VCAL Semester One Expo. Stay tuned for updates on this and to find out how you can help us celebrate the achievements of VCAL students across Semester One.
