The 2021 James Cook University Mediation Competition was held on the 1st September, after being postponed due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in early August. This competition, also sponsored by the FNQ Dispute Resolution Centre and the BLA, gave the opportunity for students to get a taste of mediation. Each school team had to mediate a simulated dispute between two neighbours concerning dogs, trees, noise and messy gardens: all very realistic issues.
Schools from all over the Cairns region participated in this extraordinary activity. St Mary’s submitted a team of four students consisting of Ethan Stingel (Year 12), Aryan Nair (Year 12), Khang Nguyen (Year 11), and Cecilia Kwok (Year 11) who this opportunity will help these four bright young adults in their future as mediation can be applied to many aspects of life. This St Mary’s team was successful in winning the competition, with the St Augustine’s team runners-up. These St Mary’s students are to be congratulated for their planning, coordination and teamwork to mediate effectively and participate in an excellent extension learning activity with commitment and professionalism.
