12 ANCIENT HISTORY TRIP TO TOWNSVILLE – VENI, VIDI, VICI

In Week 7 of this term, the St Mary's Senior Ancient History class travelled to Townsville to visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland. We were able to attend two travelling exhibitions on the Roman Empire and Ancient Antiquities, as well as visit the newly updated Pandora shipwreck display.

Stephanie, an archaeologist at the Museum and our guide for the day, provided insight into the recreation of Roman war machines and its key military commanders including two important to our studies - Julius Caesar and Augustus.

We were also able to discover more about how everyday Romans lived. Their coinage, clothing and architecture were all explained and recreated in one section of the exhibition. This latter topic was enlivened by our mosaic workshop. Everyone was able to take home their own drinks coaster with a personal design they had created.

Our students had a great time with dinner out, a visit to the Jezzine Barracks and fortifications on the Strand and comfy apartment accommodation. Many thanks to Mrs Janet Ross for organising us and Mr Ty Grady for driving us there and back!
