Founders Day

On Friday 15 May, the St James College students gathered, albeit in digital form, to celebrate the feast day of St John Baptist de La Salle who, as well as being the founder of the De La Salle Brothers, is also recognised as the Patron Saint of teachers.  Our special Founders Day Liturgy was celebrated via ZOOM and led by the Homeroom teachers.

Prior to this special day, we were very fortunate to receive a very special letter from Brother David Hawke fsc, on behalf all of the De La Salle Brothers.

In his letter, Brother David reminded us of the life of De La Salle who not only saw the educational plight of the poor, but also responded to it. Putting this extraordinary life into context, Br David called us to “honour De La Salle who called his first teachers Brothers; this reminds you that you are brothers and sisters to each other.”

As we celebrate the life and legacy of this inspirational saint, it is worthwhile to reflect on this piece of scripture from John’s Gospel.

“You did not choose me,

no, I chose you;

and I commissioned you

to go out and to bear fruit that will last;

and then the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name.

What I command you is to love one another (Jn15:14-17)

We now look forward to a very special St James Day celebration later this year in which we will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of St James College.
