Food Technology
While the many diligent and faithful fans of Masterchef tune in every night at 7.30pm sharp, students of Year 9 Food Technology are creating their own delights.
Online learning for this elective has had its challenges but l have been pleasantly surprised and reassured with the commitment of a great many of the student cohort (and parents behind the scenes).
Through learning platforms such as TEAMS, weekly posts are shared of the various theory lessons on nutrition as well as the practical lessons.
To date, topics on nutrition; healthy and non- healthy snacking; breakfast and eggs; vegetables and meat and marketing strategies have been covered. Grains and Global foods are coming soon.
Students are encouraged to try the weekly recipes, whether to give parents a break or to assist family members.
So leaving aside the merits of the over rated ‘Hibachi’, Year 9s have so far ‘mastered an array of technical skills such as: scrambling the perfect eggs; refining the elusive boiled egg, creating the creamiest mashed potato to accompany a classic Shepherd’s Pie. All of course with varying degrees of success…but it’s the trying that is the MOST important element!

I’m happy I did this because it actually required my mum to watch me, which means the prac was fun and interesting. This is a close up view of my shepherd’s pie. I made a family size one so I doubled the weight of all the ingredients. It was delicious.
