Mt Gambier Tour

Two weeks ago, the Mazenod Jazz Band and Jazz Combo travelled to Generations in Jazz, one of the world’s largest school music festivals. Accompanied by Mr Poletti, Mr Gimm, Mr Mallon and Mr Markham, the students flew to Adelaide early on Thursday morning before spending the weekend immersed in jazz music and performance.

During the festival, both ensembles had the opportunity to perform alongside schools from across Australia. It was a fantastic experience for all students involved, providing the chance to perform in a professional setting, receive feedback from expert adjudicators and listen to some incredible ensembles. The lead-up to the performances had been long, with rehearsals for their set pieces beginning halfway through last year, but all the hard work paid off as both groups performed brilliantly on the night.

Another highlight of the festival was the opportunity to connect with students from around the country who share the same passion for music, with more than 7,000 students attending this year. A major highlight of the trip was watching legendary funk and soul group Tower of Power perform live. It was incredible to see a group that has been performing together for more than 50 years, and their energy, musicianship and stage presence made for an unforgettable performance. The concert was hugely inspiring for all the students in attendance.

We are also extremely proud that Riley D (Year 10) was selected as the pianist for the Division 3 Superband. Selection into a Superband is highly competitive, and Riley is the first Mazenod student to receive this honour.

Overall, the trip was an outstanding opportunity for learning, performance and representing the College through music. As the Jazz Band attends Generations in Jazz every second year, we encourage all music students to consider auditioning in the future, as it is truly an unforgettable experience.
