Technologies at MSC
A Dynamic Start to the Term
It has been a busy and engaging period across the Technologies domain, with students continuing to build their skills through hands-on, real-world learning experiences.
Technologies Domain – Semester 1 Wrap Up
2026 marks a significant milestone for Mickleham Secondary College, with the introduction of our first specialist Technologies pathways in Food Technologies, Design Technologies and Digital Technologies. The quality of student work produced throughout Semester 1 has been outstanding and reflects the growing strength of Technologies across the college.
Food Technologies
Students in Food Technologies developed practical food preparation skills while exploring food safety, nutrition and sustainable food practices. Through a range of practical cooking experiences and design challenges, students applied the design process to create, produce and evaluate innovative food products. Highlights included multicultural pizza design challenges, food truck concepts and investigations into food waste, nutrition and ethical food production.
Design Technologies
Students in Design Technologies demonstrated exceptional creativity and problem-solving through a range of hands-on design projects. Year 8 students designed and manufactured sensory tools and illuminated products using 3D modelling, laser cutting and additive manufacturing technologies. Senior students applied increasingly sophisticated design thinking processes, progressing from research and ideation through to prototyping, production and evaluation while exploring materials, manufacturing systems and sustainable design practices.
Digital Technologies
Students in Digital Technologies explored programming, app development, game design, robotics and computational thinking. Projects ranged from app and game development through to software design and programming challenges. Senior students undertook software development projects that introduced industry-standard planning, testing and evaluation processes while building their digital problem-solving and computational thinking skills.
Robotics
Our Robotics program reached an exciting milestone this semester with a VEX Robotics incursion, providing students with hands-on experience using competition-level robotics systems. Students developed their engineering, coding and teamwork skills while exploring the possibilities of competitive robotics. Building on this success, Mickleham Secondary College will launch competitive VEX Robotics teams in Semester 2, providing students with opportunities to represent the college in regional competitions.
Expanding Our Technologies Facilities
Significant investment in emerging technologies has further expanded learning opportunities across the college. The procurement of a new laser cutter and additional 3D printers has transformed our production capabilities, enabling students to design and manufacture more than 500 laser-cut and 3D-printed projects across Years 7–10 throughout the semester.
These investments continue to strengthen authentic, hands-on learning experiences and provide students with access to industry-relevant technologies and manufacturing processes.
Looking Ahead
These achievements would not be possible without the enthusiasm of our students, the support of families and the dedication of our staff. We look forward to an even bigger Semester 2 as we continue to expand opportunities across Food Technologies, Design Technologies, Digital Technologies and Robotics.
