CULTURE, CONNECTION AND COMMUNITY

“During Reconciliation Week, MSC Koorie students participated in a meaningful day of learning, culture, and connection. The day began with students reflecting on the significance of Reconciliation Week and what reconciliation means for our school community. Students then took part in an engaging presentation from the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, exploring self-determination, Treaty progress in Victoria, and the important role young people play in shaping the future. Throughout the day, students engaged in a cultural food experience, sharing kangaroo meat and damper. They then each contributed to a collaborative mural project that celebrates identity, culture, and hopes for reconciliation. Once completed, the mural will be proudly displayed at the school's front entrance, serving as a welcoming representation of our school community and its rich diversity. The artwork reflects the voices, stories, and connections of both our school and the broader community, highlighting our shared commitment to respect, inclusion, and reconciliation.”

“Year 9 and 10 Koorie students also recently attended the Yarning Conference at Kangan Institute’s Indigenous Engagement Centre in Broadmeadows. The conference provided an engaging opportunity for students to connect with culture, community, and future pathways through a range of activities led by First Nations facilitators. Students participated in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, yarning circles, Yidaki and dance workshops, trades engagement activities, the Little Long Walk, and more. The day was a valuable opportunity for learning, connection, and cultural celebration.”
