From the Year 5 Classroom
As we move into Week 7 of Term 3, there is plenty of excitement across our school community. We would like to wish the very best of luck to all students taking part in Write a Book in a Day. This wonderful initiative provides students with the opportunity to collaborate, think creatively, and challenge themselves as writers while supporting an important cause.
We are also looking forward to celebrating Book Week this week. The Book Week Parade is always a highlight of the school calendar, and we can't wait to see the incredible costumes our students and families have created. As part of our upcoming Father's Day celebrations, Year 5 students will be creating a special keepsake to honour their father or a significant father figure in their lives. A friendly reminder for families to please check their emails for information about this activity. We kindly ask that you send in a photo of your child with their father or father figure as soon as possible so we can ensure all students can participate in this meaningful project.
Over the coming weeks, each Year 5 class will have the exciting opportunity to visit Sacred Heart College and participate in a science lesson in their new science laboratory. We look forward to these visits and the engaging learning experiences they will provide for our students.
Literature
This week, our Year 5 students have begun their exciting reading journey with The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor. Inspired by Melbourne's famous Cole's Book Arcade, this imaginative and richly detailed novel blends history, mystery, and adventure, capturing students' interest from the very first chapters. Throughout the term, we will explore the story together, using it to spark thoughtful discussions, develop comprehension skills, inspire creative writing, and foster a lifelong love of reading. We look forward to discovering the many secrets, characters, and adventures that await within the pages of this wonderful novel.
Reading Diaries
Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.
Specialist Classes
Year 5 students will continue to participate in Specialist lessons on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. This semester, students have been learning Auslan, during their Tuesday and Wednesday Specialist sessions. It has been wonderful to see them building their communication skills, developing an understanding of inclusive communication.
Students may wear their PE uniform on Thursdays and Fridays.
Learning Support Officer
Our Year 5 Learning Support Officer is Katrina Carpenter who will be working with us from Monday to Thursday.
