From the Year 4 Classroom
What a busy few weeks it has been in Year 4!
Our students have been working hard and participating enthusiastically in a range of learning experiences, and we still have plenty to look forward to before the end of the term.
Over the past few weeks, we have also been having important discussions with students about respectful relationships, including the way we treat one another and how we speak to our friends, particularly during playtime in the yard.
We would greatly appreciate your support in reinforcing these messages at home by talking with your child about the importance of speaking respectfully and making positive choices when interacting with their peers. Working together, we can help ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and valued at school.
Literacy:
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown is a story about a robot named Roz who becomes stranded on a wild island after a shipwreck. At first, the animals are afraid of her because she is different. Roz works hard to learn about the island and how the animals live.
One day, Roz finds an orphaned gosling (baby goose) named Brightbill and decides to raise him. As she cares for Brightbill, Roz learns about friendship, family, and responsibility. Over time, the animals begin to trust and accept her.
When people from the company that made Roz come to take her away, the animals help protect her because she has become an important part of their community.
In writing, we are learning about artificial intelligence (AI) and how it affects our daily lives. Students have been amazed by the rapid pace at which AI is changing and have been discussing what these developments might mean for their future. As part of this learning, students are writing a persuasive letter from the perspective of Roz, the robot from our class novel The Wild Robot. In their letters, they will aim to convince a family that AI can make their lives easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable.
Numeracy
In Mathematics, we are learning about decimals and partitioning numbers to two decimal places. Students are developing their understanding of place value and how numbers can be broken apart and represented in different ways.
Our times tables focus this week is the 6 times tables. Regular practice at home will help students build confidence and improve their fluency.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we are continuing our learning about democracy. This week, students are exploring how a bill becomes a law in Australia. We are learning about how a bill is first introduced in the House of Representatives, where it is debated and voted on. If the bill is passed, it is then sent to the Senate, where it is further considered and any amendments may be made. If both houses approve the bill, it is presented to the Governor-General for Royal Assent, at which point it becomes law. Students will role play 'the journey of a bill'
