In Visual Arts, students have continued to explore a variety of Elements of Art, with a particular focus on shape, colour, and texture. There has been plenty of creativity and excitement in the Art Room as students have been working hard to complete their artworks in preparation for our upcoming Art Show next week!
ย
Foundation
Foundation students explored the Element of Art Texture by decorating the first letter of their name using a variety of colourful and textured materials, including oil pastels, beads, buttons, jewels, pipe cleaners and other craft materials. Students enjoyed experimenting with different textures, colours and patterns to create their own unique and personalised letter artworks.
ย
Year 1/2
Year 1/2 students have been busy exploring colour and pattern through exciting glow-in-the-dark art activities. They used fluorescent pastels to create a vibrant collaborative artwork, experimenting with bright colours, lines and patterns. Students also designed and painted their own glow-in-the-dark rocks, carefully adding colourful details and patterns to create unique designs. We can't wait to see these artworks glowing at our Art Show!
ย
Year 3/4
Year 3/4 students explored shape, colour and texture while creating a collaborative patchwork quilt-inspired artwork. Students selected a template and used it to carefully cut different shapes from a variety of colourful fabrics. They then arranged and glued their fabric pieces onto their templates, exploring pattern and texture. Each individual piece was brought together to create a wonderful collaborative patchwork quilt, showcasing the students' creativity and teamwork.
ย
Year 5/6
Year 5/6 students completed sewing their imaginative Oddkin Mini Monsters, demonstrating patience, creativity and developing their sewing skills. They then explored Kinusaiga, a traditional Japanese craft that involves creating pictures by carefully fitting pieces of fabric into grooves without sewing. Students experimented with different fabrics, colours and patterns to create their own unique textured artworks.

Southland Christmas Star
Students who have completed their artworks have also been busy making colourful pom-poms for the Southland Christmas Star. This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to contribute to another collaborative creative project while practising their yarn-wrapping and fine motor skills. A big thank you to all the students and their families who have generously taken the time to make pom-poms at home. Your support and contributions areย greatlyย appreciated and will help make our Southland Christmas Star a colourful and special creation for everyone to enjoy!
Our Art Show Is Almost Here! Only one more week to go until our Art Show!

Week 3 of term was moved around a bit due to the year 34 camp. We also had an external coach come out to do one session of AFL to promote the after school program that was due to start this week. As a result in week 3 all students had one AFL session where they went through some basic skills while playing some fun and interactive games. These activities had a focus on teamwork, kicking, handballing and picking up the ball off the ground.
All the students had a great time playing some modified AFL games.
In week 4 we finished off our cricket unit. Students in all year levels played some modified games with a focus on a specific skill. All students had a game of Throwing Tug of War, where students were split into two teams and they threw balls at some bigger balls to try and push them across to the other side. A very fun game that focusing on throwing with accuracy.
The second game/activity that students did was batting, by hitting off a small batting tee. The focus was on stepping to the ball and hitting with a straight bat.
Some of the older classes moved onto a game of Rapid Fire and then Continuous Cricket which has a focus on batting but also fielding and team work. Some really fun, active games to keep all students involved in the game and learning the skills.

Over the last two weeks, students have been busy learning the new repertoire for the Christmas Extravaganza. The Prep students have been using a call-and-response method to memorise lyrics and have even worked together to choreograph the actions for the songย Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. Over the next two weeks, students will continue practising the songs for the Christmas Extravaganza, as well as working in small groups to compose a simple song using their voices, basic rhythms and melody.
It has been amazing to see the Year 1 students embrace their new Christmas repertoire and enthusiastically sing along toย Santa Claus Is Coming to Town andย Superheroes by The Script. Over the next two weeks, students will work together to compose a song using simple rhythms, their voices and an instrument of their choice.
The Year 2 students are in the final stages of completing their commercials, and I am looking forward to sharing all the completed films with the students later in the term. They will also begin learning their new repertoire for the Christmas Extravaganza, which will be held on Thursday evening in Week 10.
Next week, the Year 3 and 4 students will take part in a test screening of their commercials. Students will watch their draft commercials on a big screen and then receive feedback from their peers. This is an important part of the filmmaking process, as it will allow students to reflect critically on their work and identify changes they can make to improve their commercials. The following week will be the final lesson dedicated to this project, with an afternoon showcase to be confirmed later this term.
The Year 5 and 6 students are in the final stages of creating their compositions using GarageBand. Over the next two weeks, students will finalise their loops and begin recording their vocals in Week 6. Once all students have recorded their vocals, their songs will be shared during an afternoon session later this term. Students will also begin learning their repertoire for the Christmas Extravaganza, which will include two songs they have chosen.
