Fantastic 4

Term 4 Week 4
Year 4 Newsletter
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 4!
Literacy:
In Literacy, students have been making strong progress in persuasive writing, learning how to use opinions, evidence and persuasive techniques to convince an audience to agree with their point of view. We have been exploring common misconceptions through the books Everything You Know About Dinosaurs Is Wrong and Everything You Know About Sharks Is Wrong, challenging popular beliefs and discovering how evidence can change what we think we know.
Having investigated misconceptions about sharks, students are now turning their attention to mini beasts through Everything You Know About Mini Beasts Is Wrong. They will continue to question common beliefs, separate facts from opinions and develop convincing arguments using techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions and strong word choices.
Students are building their skills in organising their ideas, supporting their opinions with evidence and presenting their arguments clearly and confidently. They will apply their learning by creating a persuasive poster for their Week 5 CAT assessment, before moving on to planning, writing and performing their own persuasive speeches in Week 6. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and creativity as they develop their ability to persuade an audience!

Camp:
Our camp at Woorabinda was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with the natural environment, explore their surroundings and develop a deeper understanding of their place within the world. Throughout the experience, students were encouraged to take the lead in their own learning, following their interests and investigating topics such as sustainability, local flora and fauna, the marine environment and caring for our natural surroundings.
Students also explored the importance of farms and how we can care for the environment while using the land responsibly. Through a range of exciting outdoor adventures, including kayaking, archery, orienteering, night walks and challenging themselves on high ropes and rock climbing activities, students developed their confidence, independence, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
It was fantastic to see students embracing new challenges, supporting one another and building meaningful connections with both nature and their peers. Woorabinda provided a memorable experience filled with adventure, discovery and opportunities for personal growth!
Science
In Science, students will become Earth Detectives, investigating the secrets of our planet and discovering what rocks, minerals, soils and fossils can teach us about the past. They will explore the difference between body and trace fossils, learn how fossils help palaeontologists understand extinct animals, and investigate how Earth's environments have changed over time. Students will also discover what geologists do and why their work is important, examine the properties and everyday uses of different rocks and minerals, and compare soil types by looking at their appearance, texture and how water moves through them.
To showcase their learning, students will create an engaging Science poster titled “Earth Detectives: Uncovering the Secrets of the Past!” They will use scientific vocabulary, labelled diagrams, illustrations and interesting facts to explain their discoveries. This project will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate their scientific understanding, creativity and growing knowledge of the incredible world beneath our feet.
