Terrific 2

Year 2 Newsletter
Term 4 Week 4 2026 - Friday, October 30th.
What a full and fantastic two weeks we have had! We learnt so much from the Biodiversity incursion. They taught us about the native plants and animals in our school garden, and the importance of ensuring they have a safe place to live and grow, especially the blue banded bees. We had our beautiful grandparents and special friends over and we compared how our lives and the games that we play have changed over time, and created gorgeous memory envelopes that we can add to over time. We learnt how to responsibly own pets, and had a giggle with Charlie Silly Pants! Then rounding it off with our excursion to the Police Academy. An action packed couple of weeks, but we are so lucky to be able to experience this all together!
What have we been up to?
In Literacy, we have just finished up our unit of persuasive writing. We have spent the last couple of weeks writing persuasive letters. We have learnt that people write persuasive letters to convince others to feel a certain way, do a certain thing, or believe something. We learnt that everyone has their own opinions, and how we can respectfully share our own reasonings behind our opinions, while still listening to the opinions of others.
We are now moving on to reading and creating narratives with a moral. We will be exploring 2 books with a beautiful moral, while creating our own story. The biggest difference between moral narratives and the narratives that we have learnt about at school so far, is the problem within moral narratives are usually caused by the moral. The problem is usually solved by the character's change of awareness and thought process behind a certain idea.
This term, we are exploring the following in phonics:

| 7 | I not at the end (y) | Activity, ability, memory |
| 8 | 111 rule* | Run-> running, scrub-> scrubbing, hit-> hitting |
| 9 | 111 rule* | Fog-> foggy, creep-> creepy, drip -> dripping |
| 10 | 111 rule * | Swim-> swimming, spot-> spotty, plug->plugged |
| 11 | 111 rule and homophones | Drip -> dripped, clap-> clapped |
*The 1-1-1 rule
The 1-1-1 spelling rule helps students know when to double the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel, such as -ing, -ed or -er.
A word follows the rule when it has:
- 1 syllable
- 1 vowel (a short vowel sound)
- 1 consonant at the end
If all three conditions are met, double the final consonant before adding the suffix.
In Maths, we have finished up our unit of fractions. We explored halves, quarters and eighths of collections, shapes, mass and capacity. We are now moving on to a short unit of data. We are learning about the importance of observations before you do a survey. Observations allow us to ensure that we are including appropriate choices within our survey. For example, if we wanted to ask the students in our school what their favourite game to play at lunch time is, we would need to observe a lunch play time to understand the different games that are being played. This ensures we don’t include unnecessary options in our survey, like swimming!
In Inquiry, we are learning about the physical sciences - sound, light, push and pull.
We started by learning about our 5 senses and how we use them in our day to day life! They are our sense of smell, taste, hearing, sight and touch. We have also explored sound and how it travels through vibrations.
Important reminders:
- Hats are required in Term Four please. They are to be worn at all times when outdoors. We encourage water bottles to be bought each day especially with the warmer weather.
- We are continuing to send take home readers each week. Your child will not be able to take home a book without a reading satchel. If your child does not have one, please reach out to your classroom teacher. If you have any further feedback or questions regarding take home readers, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.
Please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher if you have any questions.
