Performing Arts News

This semester, the Performing Arts at St Mary’s College has been alive with creativity, courage and outstanding student achievement. From the stage to the dance floor, and from rehearsal rooms to festival performances, our students have embraced every opportunity to create, collaborate and perform with confidence.

In Drama, our senior students presented an excellent two-night season of Garage Girls. This was far more than simply performing a play; it was a full live theatre experience. Students navigated the pressure of remembering lines, managing costume changes, working through set transitions and performing through the nerves and excitement that come with being on stage. Across both performances, they showed resilience, professionalism and a growing understanding of what it takes to bring a production to life.

Our Theatre Performance students also took to the stage with their production of The Deplorables by Christine Davey. This powerful and highly engaging performance was a wonderful showcase of their skill, focus and commitment. It was an honour to welcome Christine Davey, the playwright of The Deplorables, and provide our students with the rare opportunity to perform the work in front of its writer, as well as take part in a meet and greet. With all actors present on stage for the full hour-long performance, students demonstrated impressive endurance, teamwork and stagecraft. Both Drama groups should be incredibly proud of what they achieved, representing St Mary’s College with excellence and heart.

In Dance, our students have been working hard in preparation for the Hobart Eisteddfod. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to refine their technique, strengthen their teamwork and showcase the exceptional talent within our College. Under the leadership of Mrs Lisa Thomas, our dance students continue to develop their confidence, discipline and performance quality. We are excited to see them take the floor and share what St Mary’s students can do.

In Music, our Year 5 and 6 Choir participated in the Festival of Voices, representing St Mary’s College alongside other school and community choirs from across Tasmania. Under the careful guidance of Mrs Jill Norton, our students sang with joy, confidence and enthusiasm. Their performance was a beautiful reminder of the power of young voices coming together and the extraordinary musical talent growing within our College. Read more in Junior School News. 

The Performing Arts are about far more than the final performance. They teach students courage, creativity, discipline, collaboration and resilience. Every rehearsal, every note, every line, every step and every moment on stage helps students discover what they are capable of. This semester has shown that the Performing Arts at St Mary’s College are not just thriving; they are inspiring.
