Grade 6 Community News

Dear Year 6 families,

As we reach the end of Term 1, it’s a great time to reflect on all the learning, growth, and achievements in Grade 6. This term has been particularly exciting as it’s the first-time students have experienced having two teachers, one for Maths/Humanities and one for English. They have adapted wonderfully to this new structure. Students have worked hard across all areas and should feel proud of their efforts and progress. We hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break and returns refreshed for Term 2!

Gala day

On Wednesday of Week 9, our Grade 6 students took part in the Summer Gala Day. Teams proudly represented the school in their chosen sports, while students not competing participated in a variety of engaging sports clinics at school. It was fantastic to see such positive sportsmanship on display, with students demonstrating teamwork, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout the day. We are proud to celebrate the many successes across our teams, including a number of impressive wins.

English

Over the past two weeks in English, learners have been actively engaged in consolidating their understanding of their summative assessment and poetry.

Students successfully completed their summative assessment on Kensuke’s Kingdom. Throughout this unit, learners explored character development, themes, and key events in the novel. They demonstrated their comprehension through written responses, character analyses, and structured paragraphs. Alongside this assessment, learners focused on developing their persuasive writing skills, with a particular emphasis on using high modality words (e.g., must, undoubtedly, certainly) to strengthen their arguments and express strong viewpoints effectively.

In addition, learners completed units on poetry. During this unit, learners studied various poems, focusing on poetic devices such as imagery, rhythm, and figurative language. They analysed poems and applied their knowledge by interpreting their meanings and expressing their ideas clearly in writing.

We are proud of the effort learners have shown. Their work reflects growth in both reading comprehension and written expression.

For Term 2, we will start reading our new novel, ‘The Silver Donkey’. If you have not yet purchased this novel for your child, kindly do so, as it would be beneficial for their learning.

Maths

To conclude our learning for Term 1, Grade 6 students explored the concept of time. They applied their understanding of elapsed time to determine event start and end times, as well as interpret and create their own timetables. Students then extended their learning by applying these skills to real-world contexts such as itineraries and journeys.

In Term 2, we will begin a new unit on fractions. Students will compare and order fractions, represent fractions with different denominators, and identify and model equivalent fractions.

Humanities

This term, students have been learning about European empires. To conclude the unit, they explored the effects of British imperialism on Australian society, economy, and identity, and the long-term global impacts of European empires. Throughout this topic, students engaged in rich discussions, developing their understanding of how historical events continue to shape our present.
