Grade 4 Community News

Dear Year 4 Families,

It is hard to believe we are already in Week 10, the final week of Term 1! We would like to take this opportunity to recognise the wonderful effort our students have put into their learning this term. Throughout the term, they have demonstrated our school values of kindness, growth, respect and responsibility in many ways. We are so grateful to all of our families at TRPS for your support in encouraging students to be ready to learn in all aspects of school life, and we wish you all a lovely April holiday when it comes!

English:

In English, students have rounded up the Nature Poetry unit by examining the text “Who Has Seen the Wind?” by Christina Rossetti, which is a short poem that explores the idea that some things in nature cannot be seen but can still be known through their effects. Throughout this unit, students have developed an understanding of how different text types use different language features, such as personification, which is explored throughout “Who Has Seen the Wind?” They have also practised how to interpret literal and inferential meaning within poetry. Students have deepened their vocabulary knowledge through the use of synonyms and antonyms that are explored within the unit.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students have been learning about subtraction of larger numbers, whilst practising the skill of regrouping with their knowledge of place value. Students have reviewed their learning of 2D shapes, through identifying and classifying shape types based on their properties. In addition, grade 4 classes have been further developing their knowledge and understanding of time, using problem-solving skills to calculate elapsed time through appropriate addition and subtraction strategies.

Humanities:

In Humanities, students have been learning about Viking longships and how they helped the Vikings travel long distances for exploration and raids. They have also explored Viking mythology, retelling important stories that show the Vikings’ beliefs and culture. Students have investigated the lasting contributions of the Vikings and identified ways their influence can still be seen in the world today.

Respectful Relationships:

In Respectful Relationships, students have been learning to identify and name different emotions they may feel in various situations. They have discussed both positive and uncomfortable emotions at school and explored ways to help others feel happy and supported in the classroom and playground. Students have also been learning about the importance of teamwork and respect in different scenarios. They have explored skills that help people work well together and ways to show respect to others. Students have also reflected on how it feels to be treated with respect and how they can use their strengths to treat others kindly.

REMINDERS:

• Students should bring their fully charged iPads to school each day.
