French News

Bonjour, dear parents and students,

As we reach the end of Term 1, the French team is very pleased with how receptive and capable the students have been during lessons. They consistently demonstrate a willingness to participate, take risks, and strive to do their best.

Below is a snapshot of what each year level has been focusing on during Weeks 9–10:

Prep

Prep students have been working hard on their first assessment of the term. This assessment includes both oral and written components and covers all the content they have learned so far.

Grade 1

Grade 1 students have also been completing their first assessment of the term. The assessment is divided into two parts—written and oral—testing their understanding of the content covered this term.

Grade 2

Grade 2 students have been working diligently on their assessment, which covers all term content. In addition, they have been learning about emotions in French through creative drama games and hands-on activities.

Grade 3

Grade 3 students have been exploring food vocabulary through the story The Hungry Caterpillar, a familiar and engaging text. They have extended this learning by writing their own versions of the story using different animals and foods. Students are also completing their “language portrait,” exploring similarities and differences between languages.

Grade 4

Grade 4 students have been completing their assessment and have begun writing their own French baking recipes using imperative verbs. They will finish by learning about different types of French bread and creating their own menus.

Grade 5

Grade 5 students have been learning how to talk about sports in French and how to use time and days of the week in sentences. They are now creating their own alternative endings to Snow White—happy, sad, or comedic—using descriptive adjectives. To conclude, students will participate in a Jeopardy-style review game.

Grade 6

Grade 6 students have been learning how to talk about sports and hobbies in French and how to form sentences using conjunctions such as mais and et. Like Grade 5, they are creating their own alternative endings to Snow White using adjectives. They will finish with a Jeopardy-style review game.

Upcoming Events

French Choir Club is now in full swing and has begun preparing repertoire for Jour de la Francophonie at the end of Term 2.

The Advanced French Club has also commenced, with students engaging in enriching activities to extend their learning and prepare for the French Poetry Competition.

Auditions for Jour de la Francophonie will take place at the beginning of Term 2. More information about the audition process and preparation requirements will be shared soon. The Autumn holidays will be a great opportunity for students to practice.

A PowerPoint presentation outlining the planned activities is attached:

The French Poetry Competition is also fast approaching. Teachers will be listening for students who demonstrate strong pronunciation and expression when reading their poems. Selected students may represent the school in the competition in May, so we encourage continued practice of oral French skills.

Bravo à tout le monde !

Merci, Mr. Kirby, Madam Ma, Mr. Zach, and Miss Martine
