Technologies at MSC 

Congratulations to MSC students Sarah, Inayah and Mariya, who attended the official opening of the new $15.47 million Hume Tech School at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows campus.

The students joined Member for Broadmeadows Kathleen Matthews-Ward MP, education and industry partners and guests to celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art STEM facility, which will support more than 20,000 students across all 28 secondary schools in Hume.

Sarah, Inayah and Mariya were invited following their success in the STEM Under the Sun Design Competition, where their innovative shade structure design was selected as a winning entry.

A fantastic achievement and a great opportunity to see student design thinking celebrated as part of this exciting new facility for our region.

Design 

In Years 8 and 9 Design Technology, students explored how design can respond to real-world needs and communicate meaningful ideas. Students used Autodesk Fusion to design and develop a sensory tool, considering both functionality and the needs of a user. They also used Adobe Illustrator to create stickers that identified their workbooks, and highlighted and raised awareness of selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Food 

We have had a successful and impressive term 3 in the Food Technology department.

Students across years 8, 9, and 10 have worked hard to produce food items that are

delicious and presented well. We have seen so much growth in student skill levels from

the start of the term to now. In weeks 8 and 9, year 8’s have been making chicken strips

and chips, year 9’s have been making udon noodle stir fry and year 10’s have made

Lasagna, Baguettes, and Chicken Souvlaki’s.

In their theory classes, students have been working on food safety, hygiene, foods from

around the world, cooking methods and nutrition. Our year 9 students are about to start

their CAT1 Pizza Design Task, while our year 10’s are about to start their Food Truck CAT

design.

We are also excited to see that our school vegetable garden is getting the love it

deserves. Thank you very much to Sharon, our Science Technician, for breathing life into

the space for science week and your ongoing maintenance.
